Don’t get excited, I’m not out of the woods yet!

I just wanted to drop a little update about my situation, as I didn’t want people to assume everything is back up and running just because I released a new audio.  That was something I had recorded last week, and have just been holding it in order to add all the SFX etc.  Luckily it had been saved to my Dropbox because I had wanted to listen to the raw audio after I’d finished my recordings session that day and used my iPhone while I was AFK to listen, so I had uploaded a copy that was unaffected by the computer crash.

Regarding recovery, we were able to recover a little bit from my hard drive, but not as much as I’d hoped. I was very happy to recover an audio project that I’ve been working on for the better part of the year for an audio story that will be about 2 hours long when complete. It’s about 3/4 complete and I’m so glad I didn’t have to start over!  I’m hoping to finish that next month (though it’s not Patreon-friendly, so I won’t go into specific details about it here, you know the drill!)

Basically we’re now at the decision point between:

  • Gettting a new hard drive and repair the iMac – which is 5-6 years old already
  • Getting a new computer since it’s not long until I’ll need an upgrade anyway

Unfortunately I can’t really afford to do that in the very near future, and I don’t want to scrimp by and buy something that barely meets my requirements just because of being in a financial bind right now (having just bought new furniture and us maxing out our credit on Christmas presents for Daddy’s kids, etc.) So my plan is to try and get as much functionality out of this old spare computer that we have on hand until I can replace the broken one.

Yesterday I received an email from an unbelievably generous long-term patron who offered to advance me the money to get whatever I need, and I’ve just written back to express my gratitude as well as my hesitation in accepting such generosity. They have hired me for some quite sizeable recordings in the past (including the 2 hour one that I mentioned in the 2nd paragraph above), and I am sure that they will have no problem putting me to work to pay off my debt.  But I want to hear back from this patron first before I get anyone’s hopes up, especially mine.

As things are right now, it might be a week or so before I can start recording new content at this stage. I have installed all of the software components I need (that I can remember at least), but now I have to spend a bit of time reconfiguring all the  processing effects to fit my voice, as I don’t have a backup copy of any of those settings.  It took quite a bit of tweaking to get those settings established in the first place, because everyone’s voice is different, everyone’s room tone is different, everyone’s microphone is different… so everyone’s settings need to be customized to their exact sound. So that’s my next task to work on.

All I can ask is that everyone please be patient while I get things up and running again!
